Neuroimaging: Essentials of major neuroimaging techniques (EEG, MEG, fMRI, PET, TMS). (Code: NTEU_RU_00123).

– Dates: 4-8 September 2023.
– Host university: Radboud University (Donders Institute for Brain, Cognition and Behaviour).
– Description: This is an intensive 5-days course, which will provide participants with the essentials of all major neuroimaging techniques, including ERP, MEG, fMRI, PET, and TMS. Aspects of the measurement methods, design requirements, experimental set-up, image processing and statistical analyses will be discussed. The course will be in the form of lectures, video demonstrations, question-answer sessions, and on-site lab visits & demos.

Advanced (f)MRI: From Image Acquisition to Computation Model. (Code: NTEU_RU_00223).
Dates: 18-22 September 2023.
Host university: Radboud University (Donders Institute for Brain, Cognition and Behaviour).
Description: This intensive 5-day course will provide an overview of the MR Methods (that can be) used in Cognitive Neuroimaging. The first part of the course covers the basic MR physics needed to obtain MR signal, create MR images and discusses the physical mechanisms driving the MRI contrast (beyond fMRI) and artifacts. The second part of the course is dedicated to model free and model based fMRI processing strategies.
Finally, the course will give an overview of advanced applications and future trends of fMRI, from ultrafast to high-spatial resolution and possible combinations with other methodologies.
Each day will consist of a set of morning lectures followed by an afternoon with various hands-on sessions based either in MATLAB or FSL.

Neurodegenerative Disorders I: Genes, Mechanisms and Clinical Aspects. (Code: NTEU_KI_00323).
Dates: 25-29 September 2023.
Host university: Karolinska Institutet (Department of Neurobiology, Care Sciences and Society).
Description: The purpose of the course is for participants to gain knowledge concerning genetics, molecular mechanisms as well as clinical features and treatment strategies of neurodegenerative disorders.
To gain and apply new knowledge, participants will (in addition to lectures by experts in the field) prepare and give their own oral presentations as well as ask and answer questions in the group during the course week. The course will cover topics related to the degeneration of neural cells, apoptosis and necrosis as well as the cellular and biochemical reactions to neurodegeneration. During the course we will also present and discuss genetics, epidemiology, pathology, symptoms, diagnosis and treatment strategies of the most common neurodegenerative disorders such as Alzheimer disease, Parkinson disease, frontotemporal dementia, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis and multiple sclerosis.

Brain Circuits. (Code: NTEU_KI_00423)
Dates: 02-06 October 2023.
Host university: Karolinska Institutet (Department of Neuroscience).
Description: The purpose of the course is to provide doctoral students in the field of neuroscience with an overview of current state-of-the art approaches, technologies and concepts used for understanding of the brain’s circuits and functions in animal models. There is a very strong emphasis on research in mice. The course will cover the organization and function of main circuits in the brain, including the interaction and participation of different cell types, the interplay between excitation and inhibition, and how circuit output results in behavior. Different techniques for recording, labeling and manipulation of neuronal circuits in animal models will be discussed, including electrophysiology, molecular targeting, optogenetics and viral tracing. The connection between deficient circuit functions and neuropsychiatric disorders will be included, as well as animal behavior tests probing specific circuits and circuit (dys)functions. Specific emphasis will be put into describing the technologies currently used in the neuroscience field.

Functional Cognitive Neuroanatomy. (Code: NTEU_KI_00523)
Dates: 09-13 October 2023.
Host university: Karolinska Institutet (Department of Neuroscience).
Description: This course aims to provide a basis in cognitive neuroscience and the neuroanatomy that supports it. The course will enable participants to get a good understanding of how the brain makes decisions, forms long term memories and handles emotions. The course consists of theoretical sessions and practical work related to decision-making, memory formation and emotion. It will also include the neuroanatomy related to these functions using both MRI and human brains. The participants will be actively involved in group work dealing with practical and theoretical aspects of cognitive neuroanatomy.

The developing brain. (Code: NTEU_KI_00623)
Dates: 16-20 October 2023.
Host university: Karolinska Institutet (Department of Medical Biochemistry and Biophysics).
Description: Developmental biology lies at the heart of an effort to understand complex biological systems. By studying how neural circuits are assembled we can extrapolate key aspects of their function as well as devise strategies for their repair. This course is given to deepen the understanding of how molecular and cellular mechanisms underlie neurobiological function and to widen the horizon of students within the strong Karolinska neuroscience community. The course will cover the main steps of development from neural stem cells to mature circuits, including the patterning of the neural plate and thus the origin of cell types, the interplay between intrinsic and extrinsic factors, gene regulation including epigenetics, neuro-glia interactions and the role of network activity in shaping the final circuits. Different molecular and tracing technologies, and model organisms will be covered. An important aspect of the course regards molecular technologies for labeling, transcriptional analysis and genetic manipulation of defined neural populations. Connections between aberrant developmental processes and neurological disorders will be discussed.
